McCoy Cookie Jars

Some of the most creative McCoy potteries are the vintage McCoy cookie jars.  In the last hundred years, people have collected the dozens of adorable McCoy pottery designs that are available.  McCoy made the jars in many designs including clown, chef, Raggedy Ann and owl cookie jars.

Many of McCoy’s cookie jars are less than politically correct today, but have collectible value, like an Indian Head, Mammy, and even an Aunt Jemima.  Many of these vintage pieces can be found cheap on eBay, but watch out for reproductions, especially of the very popular styles.

If you find a cookie jar dating before 1910, then you know it cannot be a “real” McCoy. The Nelson McCoy Company operated until 1928 when it became part of a conglomerate. These stoneware products did not have the McCoy trademark.

It was around 1929 that the company began to mark its wares. Some form of the original company operated until it was sold in 1967. Nelson McCoy, Jr. remained president of the new company until 1981. All pottery connected to the original McCoy ceased to be made in 1990.

McCoy cookie jars are particularly fun to collect because they are pretty or cute in their own right. Even one could be a focal point in any style kitchen. Prices range from under $50 to the hundreds depending on the rarity and appeal of the design and whether it is numbered or not.
